The design objectives for this new recording technology were established against the reference point of the present one-inch analog technology, which is finding wide acceptance in the broadcast industry. The advantages and disadvantages of various digitizing methods and sampling rates, and their significance for the existing television standards of the world, were weighed against one another. Digital recording of sounds and its specific problems were related to digital recording of video.
