The move from analog to digital has had impacts far beyond what many would have anticipated. The whole area of schedule and as run metadata, or as it is often referred to in aggregate, event-related metadata, is in the process of undergoing the most significant improvement it has undergone since the manual entry of events into automation gave way to batch file transfers. The evolution currently underway involves improvements on several fronts. Proprietary approaches are giving way to standardization. Batch transfers of data are being complemented by dynamic, interactive integration of systems. Flat files are being replaced by XML files and messages.
