Within SMPTE 33TS, an IEEE-1588 profile suited for the production industry is under definition. PTP has been widely adopted in other industries to synchronize nodes in asynchronous networks such as Ethernet. If PTP is used for synchronizing broadcasting equipment replacing systems like color black, locking times of five seconds are required to facilitate frequent changes in the network topology offering the same availability as analog systems. After describing ways to obtain short lock times results are presented for a three hop network. Different classes of PTP unaware components were used ranging from older generation desktop devices to current generation data-center units with line-rate switching capabilities.
