The focus is on MPEG-7 and Semantic Web technologies, for reasons described in the Introduction. This paper is not intended to be a comprehensive survey of academic and industrial efforts currently addressing the subject of multimedia semantics, which are too numerous and varied in scope to be discussed in a single paper. After a brief presentation of the semantic description features of MPEG-7, the paper discusses current work intended to leverage Semantic Web technologies to address multimedia semantics.
