"abstract": "The distribution of program content to broadcasters, cable headends, satellite uplink sites, and between production studios is a high-volume and cumbersome process requiring immense resources. Today, content distribution is largely conducted via satellite circuits and physical tape. In certain cases, the element of time becomes important enough that physical movement of videotape is not even considered an option. Technological advances in the development of lower-cost, higher-powered computing and digital processing devices are finding wider use in the creation and delivery of programming. With server-based (digital) content storage, delivery becomes a matter of moving bits; however, digital program content transport requires payload bit rates from 20 Mbits/sec to 270 Mbits/sec. Existing electronic, network-based content delivery systems are limited in capacity, signal performance, and flexibility. Leveraging advanced terrestrial digital networks holds the promise of removing these limitations. This paper will describe the development and envisioned uses of a unique network interface device (NID) that is expected to make content transport via advanced common carrier (ATM and SONET/SDH) communications networks as easy as making phone calls.",

Donaldson is experienced in RF (microwave) transmission systems design and in radio and fiber-optic communications systems deployment. Other activities include measurement and evaluation of mobile radio propagation and experimentation with antenna diversity techniques. Currently, he is responsible for the development and evaluation of advanced communications technology in MCI's Transmission Network Development organization. It is within this organization that he supports the NIST/HDTV contract, leading the technical research and development of a network interface device (NID) interfacing MCI's communications network production studios and operations facilities. Donaldson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electronics engineering technology (BSEET) from DeVry Institute of Technology (Dallas) and an MBA degree from the University of Texas at Dallas. He is an active member of the SMPTE.",

Current projects/work areas include DBS; HDTV network interface device development; MCI Videophone product design; fractal compression development; and general counsel in television, advanced television, and multimedia subject matter. He formerly owned and operated Oro Communications Technology, Inc., in Princeton, N.J. Huffman was employed by RCA Network Services, Inc., from 1982 until 1987. He planned, designed, and implemented one of the first all-digital corporate networks following the AT&T divestiture and deregulation period. He was with RCA Broadcast Systems from 1965 until 1982. Huffman began his career as a studio systems engineer and worked for RCA Broadcast Studio and Transmission Systems for 15 years. He attended Port Arthur College, Port Arthur, Texas, and completed the radio engineering curriculum. He is the co-inventor, with Robert Hurst, Sr., of a U.S. Patent for the Continuous Motion Special Effects Generator.",
