This file format is in use in hundreds of facilities around the world. In 1999, the Pro-MPEG Forum started work on the Material eXchange Format (MXF) as a flexible “container” format that could be adapted to a wide variety of applications while transporting a variety of audio, video, and data essence types. In addition, MXF was designed to incorporate a rich set of metadata. After the initial development was completed by the Pro-MPEG Forum, the work was contributed to SMPTE for standardization. The resulting standards are now supported by many broadcast equipment vendors. A lot was learned from the GXF experience.
