    "abstract": "The color seen in a motion picture theater is the film color as rendered by the projection light source. This light source is usually a xenon lamp modified by many other elements, such as heat filters, lens coatings, port windows, and screen reflectance. The practice of specifying screen illumination by its color temperature will fail if the resulting light source does not match a black-body radiator. Recent measurements of the CIE chromaticity coordinates at several studios and labs confirms that real projection sources are variable and do not have the color of a black-body radiator. The use of chromaticity coordinates is proposed as an improved specification of projection screen illumination.",

        "bio": "Glenn Berggren is currently senior partner, Sigma Design Group, in Santa Monica, Calif., where he is responsible for design and development of special projection systems and room layouts for both cinemas and special venue projects. He served as chairman of the P-3 Projection Committee on four separate occasions and has been involved in the design and marketing of projection equipment since 1962. Berggren has been recognized with five Academy technical awards for projection lenses and unique projection systems. The widely used SMPTE Test Film RP-40 was created by Kodak in response to his 1967 technical paper on resolution test films, and the design concepts of many new cinema projection lenses can be traced to test data from Berggren's Ultra Vision® system of 1967 to 1974. He also participated in the development of the concave Tørus® cinema screen. His previous experience includes work at Kollmorgen Optical, Wil-Kin/ Atlanta (part of ABC theaters), Osram/ Newburgh, ISCO/Schneider Lenses, Optical Radiation Corp., and the Professional Sound Equipment Division of General Electric. Berggren was a founding member of the Theatre Equipment Association and the Technology Council of the Motion Picture and Television Industry and one of the several co-founders of the Intersociety Committee. He has designed four different cinema lens calculation slide rules and has authored over 200 technical papers or magazine articles on the topic of cinema projection. He is considered an authority on cinema projection lenses, curved screen designs, screen light, color measurement on the screen, special formats and, recently, HDTV room layouts and screen designs, to simulate film quality. He has been a Fellow of the SMPTE since 1971.",
