    "abstract": "JPEG2000 is the latest international standard for image compression. It combines state-of-the-art image compression performance with a rich feature set JPEG2000 codestreams are highly scalable. Many different image products can be extracted from a JPEG2000 code-stream without decompression. For instance, lower resolution and/or lower quality imagery may be extracted from a compressed codestream of higher resolution and/or higher quality. Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) has selected JPEG2000 for future distribution of motion pictures. This selection was based in part on the fact that JPEG2000 is an open international standard that can support both 2K and 4K resolution projectors from a single codestream. The JPEG2000 feature set is discussed, followed by a high-level description of the JPEG2000 algorithm.",

        "bio": "Michael W. Marcellin graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from San Diego State University in 1983. He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1985 and 1987, respectively. Since 1988, Marcellin has been with the University of Arizona, where he is professor of electrical and computer engineering, and professor of optical sciences. His research interests include digital communication and data storage systems, data compression, and signal processing. Marcellin has authored/coauthored more than 150 papers in these areas. A major contributor to the JPEG2000 standardization process, Marcellin chaired the JPEG2000 Verification Model Ad Hoc Group, which was responsible for the software implementation and documentation of the JPEG2000 algorithm. Marcellin was the 1992 recipient of the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award and a co-recipient of the 1993 IEEE Signal Processing Society Senior (Best Paper) Award. He is a member of SMPTE and SPIE, and is a Fellow of the IEEE.",
