    "abstract": "As PCs and other digital devices play an increased role in manipulating, delivering, and managing digital video, in both home and professional broadcast environments, the distinction between consumer electronics and computers begins to blur. Consumers want to use their PCs to easily enjoy, manage, and share digital media across different devices, from cable set-top boxes to DVD players to laptops and television sets. Home networks are becoming increasingly “media-savvy,” facilitating movement of digital content to/from the living room and den. Broadcasters and content publishers want to deliver the experience that consumers demand and must compress the content—be it standard-definition or high-definition video—for digital broadcast, disk, or download, with as little signal loss and degradation as possible. Overall, there is an increasing need for higher quality video and audio at lower and lower bit rates for an increasing range of devices and applications. This paper will describe the underlying technology and concepts embodied in VC-1, the proposed SMPTE standard based on the Windows Media Video 9 advanced video codec.",

        "bio": "Ann Marie Rohaly is a program manager in the Digital Media Division of Microsoft, responsible for Windows Media Video programs and VC-1 conformance. Prior to joining Microsoft in 2003, she spent five years at Tektronix, Inc., in several senior positions including strategic technology manager for the video product line. Rohaly has been an active participant in the ITU's Video Quality Experts Group. She was chosen as editor-in-chief of the group's Phase I Final Report on the Validation of Objective Models of Video Quality Assessment and played a lead role in the ITU standardization of Tektronix's Emmy award-winning PQA300 picture quality measurement technology. She has also served as a judge for the World Airline Entertainment Association's Avion Awards since 2004. Rohaly holds a B.E.S. in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania.",

        "bio": "Regis J. Crinon received a Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. He began his career at Tektronix Inc., where he co-developed the three-dimensional NTSC and PAL chrominance/luminance separation for the Emmy award-winning Profile video editing system. He has been with Microsoft Corp. since 2002, where he is currently the lead program manager for the Windows Media audio/video/image programs. Crinon has been an active participant in the MPEG systems standardization process. In 1999, he was recognized twice by MPEG for outstanding contributions to MPEG systems standards. He also served as chair of the ATSC T3/S13 Data Broadcast Specialist Group from 2000 until 2002 and received the ATSC Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Technical Contributor Award in 2002. Crinon also co-authored a book entitled Data Broadcasting: Understanding the ATSC Data Broadcast Standard. He is an adjunct faculty member at Oregon State University where he has taught several courses in the area of digital video processing.",

Prior to Microsoft, he spent 15 years at Panasonic in senior management positions including VP/strategic product development at Panasonic Broadcast, where he helped launch DVCPRO and drive HDTV strategy for the U.S. Griffis started his career at RCA, earning eight patents in TV product design. He is currently a member of the board of the Digital Living Network Alliance as well as past vice-chairman. He also serves on the board of directors of the SMPTE Foundation and ATSC Forum and is a past member of the board of the ATSC. Griffis has served as two-term president of the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society. He holds a BSEE from Tufts University and an MSEE from Purdue University.",
