    "abstract": "The duplicating process has been studied at five Hollywood laboratories. Prints made both by the duplicating process and directly from an original negative have been obtained from all five laboratories. No attempt was made in this study to include the sound track. A complete sensitometric study was made using both the printed-through technique and customary Type IIb Sensitometer gamma controls for each step in the duplicating process. Resolving-power measurements throughout the various steps in the process were also obtained. Considerable variation has been found in the degree of fidelity of the duplicating procedure at the five laboratories studied. In most instances it is possible to determine the cause or causes of poor quality by examination of the sensitometric data. Underexposure of either the master positive or the duplicate negative or both is found to be the greatest cause of lack of proper tone reproduction in the duplicate prints.",
