It has been said that nature abhors a vacuum, and it may similarly be said that the mind of the mechanical engineer abhors an intermittent movement. In the projection machine of today, the visiting engineer finds a mechanism of steel feeding a fragile ribbon of celluloid by imparting rapid jerks applied through unyielding sprockets meshing with perforations in the celluloid. It requires no great perspicacity to see that an arrangement of this kind must lead to trouble of various kinds, and most of you will agree with the writer when he says that the intermittent movement constitutes a great hindrance to the simplification of projection apparatus.
