    "abstract": "The Smithsonian Institution was created in 1846 by act of Congress according to the terms of the will of James Smithson, of England, who bequeathed his property to the U. S. Government for the purpose of founding at Washington an establishment for increasing and diffusing knowledge among men, and to be known as the Smithsonian Institution. The Section of Photography is a part of the Division of Graphic Arts. It constitutes in its exhibits a history of photography, both still and motion, as represented by 12,180 specimens. The present paper describes some of these exhibits in relation to their historical aspects.",
