The main requirement the system satisfies is the ability to efficiently process three-dimensional images, i.e., video sequences, and to represent them in both the image domain and in the spatiotemporal frequency domain as three-dimensional spectra. By using the three-dimensional spectra of the luminance (Y) and chrominance (U, V) output signals, spectral information representing the two major parameters of analog television, spatiotemporal resolution and cross effects between the luminance and chrominance signals may be obtained. In addition the system is also capable of carrying out a detailed assessment of nonlinear effects, e.g., aliasing, caused by enhanced television coding techniques.
