Various resolution steps were obtained by defocusing the electron beam, thus worsening the primary resolution. The aim was to assess the levels of preference of the common consumer, in order to lead technical CRT design efforts toward the best compromise preference/costs. Preference ratings were collected and analyzed. Main conclusions seem to be as follows: resolution is always welcome at a relatively close viewing distance (1.5 m) and in low ambient light.
