    "abstract": "This paper addresses issues of audio distribution for modern digital television (DTV) systems focusing on digital broadcast systems. In particular, a model is described for handling audio and video elementary streams in existing distribution networks. The model supports new system architectures that allow audio and video coding to take place at many points in the distribution chain. It covers both physical and logical interface formats, synchronization with associated video signals, and carriage of metadata associated with the audio. The model also demonstrates that many audio features of new digital delivery formats can be exploited by existing broadcast systems with minimal additional equipment investment. It makes use of existing AES and SMPTE standards; however, new standards and recommended practices to support the open model may be desired by the industry. Specific recommendations are discussed. In addition, examples of systems applying the model to DTV broadcast facilities are described, including examples of products that implement the audio coding function using the model.",

He is a member of SMPTE and IEEE, and is active in SMPTE standards activities. Terry holds BEE and MSEE degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology.",

        "bio": "Craig Todd holds a Bachelors Degree in Physics from the California Institute of Technology. He has been with Dolby Laboratories since 1977 and is currently the senior member of the technical staff. He has been involved with multichannel sound for over 20 years, beginning with his work that established the Dolby Surround Sound matrix system in the cinema and later in the home. Recently he has been involved with the development of technology for digital audio coding and its application to broadcasting. In 1989, Todd demonstrated digital audio on an over-the-air broadcast at the NAB convention. More recently he has concentrated on multichannel digital audio for television which resulted in Dolby Digital coding technology and its acceptance for incorporation into the U.S. HDTV broadcast standard. Todd is an active participant in the ITU-R where he was involved in the drafting of several audio recommendations and where he is currently vice-chairman of WP10C. He also participates in ATSC, SMPTE, and AES standards setting activities. He is a member of SMPTE, IEEE, and a Fellow of the AES. Todd holds a number of patents in the areas of matrix surround and digital audio coding technology.",
